Building on the success of its critically-lauded Writers Guides, Square One Publishers has signed filmmaker Michael
Steven Gregory to contribute a new book that expands the popular series. Appropriately titled How to Produce Your Movie:
A Complete Guide to Making an Independent Film for Market, it is slated for release in 2007.
Similar in breadth of scope, volume and density of information to other titles in the series, which includes Ken Atchity's
How to Publish Your Novel: A Complete Guide to Making the Right Publisher Say Yes and Lydia and Joan Wilen's How
To Sell Your Screenplay: A Realistic Guide to Getting a Television or Film Deal, Gregory's book aims to be an
indispensable resource for its target audience.
"Francis Ford Coppola once predicted that the future of filmmaking might lie in the hands of a little girl with a hand-held
camera, tucked away in some little town in the Midwest," said Gregory. "That future has arrived, and for a very long time
I've wanted to write a book that might definitively empower that little girl, and all indie filmmakers like her, with the
tools and insight to
successfully make the movies they set out to make. When seeing the tremendous effort and quality put into the first books in
the (Writers Guides) series, I recognized immediately that now is the time and Square One is the publisher to write it for."
Square One was founded by veteran publisher Rudy Shur, who started his career as a field representative for Charles E.
Merrill Publishing Company and William C. Brown Publishing Company, where he ranked as a top salesman in each sales force.
In 1976, Shur and his partners founded Avery Publishing Group. Over time, Avery was developed into a successful mid-size
firm, achieving market dominance in the field of alternative health books. In 1999, Avery was sold to Penguin Putnam Inc.
Enjoying the opportunity to once again achieve success in the publishing arena, Shur explains the name of his company:
"After over twenty years of publishing, I find myself back at square one. It was a wonderful journey. However, now that I
am back to the place I started, I know the place for the first time. And I can't think of a better place to be."
