SAN DIEGO—As many as 150 students from San Diego County high schools and colleges will gather at the Scripps Ranch
campus of Alliant International University to take part in a two-day film production experience called 48 Hours of
Madness. Beginning in the evening of Friday, March 7, teams of students and faculty from their respective schools
will be given the same five-page script and will only have two days to produce a film. Sunday evening, March 9, all
participating students and teachers will gather to screen all the entries over dinner. The best of these films will
become Official Selections to BestFest 2003 which will take place on Saturday and Sunday, April 26 and 27, 2003 at
the San Diego Natural History Museum. Amongst the students participating in the 48 Hours of Madness will be those
from AIU's Document Production (COM 4110) class.
Films chosen for BestFest 2003 undergo rigorous judging by a panel who view all films and nominate 5-7 in each
category (drama, comedy, non-fiction, music video, experimental, themed public service announcement, and
screenwriting). The judges evaluate the films on structure/story, creative approach, and technical & creative
excellence.
The Visual Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization, conducts BestFest each year, raising prize money through
sponsorships and its primary fund-raiser, Oscar Nightâ America, the Academy-sanctioned elegant viewing party of the
Academy Awards telecast. BestFest has grown steadily over each of the past three years. This year, approximately 600
students from 35 area schools are expected to submit 300 films. With $15,000 in prize money on the line, the
competition is sure to be steep. For more information about the BestFest San Diego Student Film Festival go to
