Bootcamp wages Peace for nine days

SAN DIEGO—Nearly 70 students participated in the Indie Filmmaker's Bootcamp at Alliant International University's Scripps Ranch campus June 23-July 3, 2003. A total immersion program in which aspiring filmmakers actually make a movie – from concept through execution under the guidance of working professionals – the result of their collective 9-day effort is the short film Rock, Paper, Peace.

Despite spanning several 16-hour days of real-world production experience for many of the participants, nearly all emerged from the bootcamp ready for more. Said participant Brian Kim, "I've learned more in a 12-hour shoot than four years in the media program at UCSD, and at the end of the day, weary and hungry, I knew that I made the right choice to do this because I would've loved working eight more hours to get that perfect shot."

And from participant Rabiah Coon, "I have never been so disappointed to go back to my day job as I was after those two weeks. It was truly remarkable."

A joint effort by the American Academy of Arts (A3)and Random Cove LLC, the Indie Filmmaker's Bootcamp is the first part of an extended filmmaking program being developed at AIU by Filmmaker in Residence Michael Steven Gregory, and director of Summer Programs Miles Beauchamp.

"The generosity and passion of our colleagues to work alongside the students is what makes this program such a success," asserts Gregory. The filmmakers involved include A3 co-founder and IFB#1 co-producer Stan Foster, award-winning educator and digital media specialist Ross Kallen, director of photography Tom Jewett, assistant director Hope R. Goodwin, casting director Stanzi Stokes, screenwriter Anna Gilson, gaffer Nick Berry, sound recordist George Marshall, post technician Larry Gagnon, and distribution & marketing expert Andy Friedenberg.

Among those providing sponsorship and support for IFB#1: Apple, Current Waves Lighting Services, Cinergy 2000, Final Draft, FrameForge 3-D Studio, Panasonic, Rancho Bernardo High School Digital Media Department, Visual Arts Foundation, XETV Fox 6, and others.
