| Southern California Writers' Conference to hold inaugural event in Oxnard |

OXNARD — Recognized as among the premier writing conferences in the country, the Southern California Writers’
Conference, which for the past 16 years has been held exclusively in San Diego, is launching a companion event in
Oxnard beginning October. Dubbed “a working writers weekend,” hope for the new conference is that it, too, will
become a popular annual event for aspiring and accomplished authors.
Founded and run by professional authors of fiction, nonfiction and screen, the SCWC is renowned for its comprehensive
mix of read & critique and interactive workshops, guest panels and evening speakers, facilitating many first-book
deals with N.Y. publishers and Hollywood film & network television producers. “Over $2.6 million worth of book and
screen deals have been signed as a result of material and contacts nurtured at the SCWC,” said executive director
Michael Steven Gregory.
Though its emphasis is fiction and nonfiction, the event is ideal for writers of all genres and levels. Offering
extensive manuscript read & critique opportunities in an environment rarely found at similar events, the conference
features dozens of daytime and special late-night “Rogue” workshops—where participants join marathon sessions
sometime lasting until four or five o’clock in the morning—guest speakers Friday and Saturday night, a literary
agents panel, the SCWC banquet, one-on-one evaluations, and an awards ceremony.
Writers on this year’s staff include New York Times bestselling author Jill Marie Landis, (Blue Moon), breakout
author Scott Phillips (The Ice Harvest), crime writers Paul Bishop and Gary Phillips, biographer Raymond Strait,
federal special agent Michael R. Shevock, and many others.
