Booksigning bonanza marks conference return

SAN DIEGO—Recognized as among the premier writing conferences in the country, the Southern California Writers’ Conference is holding its 2nd annual Oxnard event October 3-5, 2003. Dubbed “a working writers weekend,” the sister event to the 17-year-old San Diego conference is commemorating its return to Oxnard with a Friday afternoon booksigning celebration of many of the authors on its staff, three of which have new books just released:

C.J. (JERRY) HANNAH - Legendary workshop leader, founder of both the Santa Barbara Writers’ Conference “Pirate” and SCWC’s “Rogue” sessions, his latest novel is The Midnight Writers, about murder at a writers conference (but not the SCWC!).

GLEN HIRSHBERG - Award-winning writer and longtime contributor to LA Weekly, the follow-up to his remarkable debut novel, The Snowman’s Children, is a collection of ghost stories entitled The Two Sams, out October (advance copies will be available).

RAYMOND STRAIT - Television personality and author of 27 celebrity biographies, his latest is Bob Hope: A Tribute, which was eight years in the making.

Founded and run by professional authors of fiction, nonfiction and screen, the SCWC is renowned for its comprehensive mix of read & critique and interactive workshops, guest panels and evening speakers, facilitating many first-book deals with N.Y. publishers and Hollywood film & network television producers. “Over $2.6 million worth of book and screen deals have been signed as a result of material and contacts nurtured at the SCWC,” said executive director Michael Steven Gregory.

Additional writers on board include Rachel Ballon (Breathing Life into Your Characters), Allison Burnett (Christopher), Lynette Brasfield (Nature Lessons), Drusilla Campbell (Wildwood), Anton Diether (Fox’s Beauty and the Beast), Marla Miller (All-American Girls), Alan Russell (Exposure), and others, including book and screen agents, managers and editors.

Friday’s Booksiging is open to the public, 5:15-7:30 p.m. For a free brochure call (619) 233-4651 or go online to www.WritersConference.com.
